The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR)
is an organization with a deeply rich history while also being truly relevant in today’s world.

More than 1,000,000 women have joined the organization since it was founded over 125 years ago.
They became members to honor their heritage as well as make a difference
in their communities across the country and the world.

SSE Makes a Difference in Our Local Community!

Here are just a few of Susannah Smith Elliott chapter’s community activities:

Historic Preservation:

  • Raised funds for an America 250! Patriots Marker placed at the new Dorechester County Library on the Ashley River.
  • Ongoing cleaning and documentation of the gravestones at Old White Church Cemetery.
  • Recent research and documentation of our chapter’s namesake, Susannah Smith Elliott, including discovery of the location of her plantation in Dorchester County.

Education:

  • Collected books about the Revolutionary War and donated to a local elementary school.
  • Attended President’s Day Celebration dressed in Revolutionary War era clothing and read books to students about George Washington.
  • Planned commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the Tea Party to be held at Ashley River Park in December 2023, targeting school aged children, with many activities planned, including dumping tea in the lake!

Patriotism:

  • Handed out American flags to new citizens at the June 2023 Naturalization Ceremony at Middleton Place.
  • Prepared meals for veterans’ families staying at the Fisher House Charleston.
  • Wrote notes and made snack bags for veterans undergoing chemotherapy at Ralph Johnson VA Hospital in Charleston.
  • Recognized outstanding JROTC and ROTC cadets at Dorchester County High Schools and Charleston Southern University.
